IPv6 Subnet & Prefix Calculator
Calculate IPv6 expanded addresses, subnet ranges, prefix breakdowns, and total /64 subnets from any IPv6 prefix (/48, /56, /64).
Planning IPv6 Address Space & Prefix Delegation
IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses written in hexadecimal notation. ISPs typically receive a /32 or /48 prefix from their Regional Internet Registry (RIR) and delegate /56 or /64 prefixes to residential and enterprise customers.
Unlike IPv4, IPv6 eliminates NAT. Proper prefix delegation ensures every subscriber router receives a static or dynamic /56 prefix containing 256 individual /64 subnets.

IPv6 Subnet & Prefix Calculator Engineering FAQs
What prefix size should ISPs delegate to residential customers?
RIR best practices (APNIC, ARIN, RIPE) recommend delegating a /56 prefix (giving the customer 256 /64 subnets) or at minimum a /60 prefix.
What is SLAAC and why are /64 prefixes standard for LANs?
Stateless Address Autoconfiguration (SLAAC) requires a /64 prefix length to automatically generate 64-bit Interface IDs (EUI-64 or randomized privacy addresses).
Do IPv6 subnets require broadcast addresses?
No. IPv6 eliminates broadcast entirely and uses ICMPv6 multicast groups (e.g., ff02::1 for all nodes) for neighbor discovery.
